Educated at Trinity College 4 years earlier, William Cavendish was the heir presumptive to the 6th duke of Devonshire and an officer in the Derbyshire militia.

George Bankes was the brother of former MP, William Henry Bankes.

The by-election returned Cavendish as MP for the University of Cambridge.
